Soup & Bread 2011: It begins

The new year is upon us. Holy cr*p. But, before we bust out the Champagne (and, in my case, hit the road for a weekend in Wisconsin) let’s make it official: Soup & Bread starts next Wednesday, January 5, with an all-star lineup of some of our favorite soup cooks  — and some special guests.

Stepping up to the crock to kick off our third season:

Celestial Kitchens proprietor Celeste Dolan and cabinetmaker Devon Bergman, the brains (and hands) behind our beautiful recipe boxes.

Hideout bartender and crafty lady Anastasia Davies Hinschliff

Bigbite Catering‘s Brian Ferguson

Time Out Chicago senior food and drink correspondent Heather Shouse (Whoops, Heather has to reschedule.)

Costume designer, wardrobe stylist, and Soup & Bread newbie Debbie Baer

And our most excellent, stalwart, and vegetarian friends at Swim Cafe

ADDED! Bassist and all-around good guy Tom V. Ray! He promises chili.

And, as an exciting new opening night bonus, we’re going to have pie (PIE!), courtesy of Paula Haney and her crew at Hoosier Mama Pie Company.  Thanks so much to Paula, Rae, and the awesome Hoosier Mama crew for their generosity. It was their idea!

And, to set the mood, we’re also featuring the soup-friendly sounds of DJ Mary Nisi, in a Soup & Bread first. Thanks, Mary!

All donations raised on this inaugural night of Soup & Bread go to the Casa Catalina Basic Human Needs Center at Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Back of the Yards.

Soup & Bread starts at 5:30 and runs until 7:30 or the soup runs out at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia. Kids are welcome (if accompanied by an adult) and donations are pay-what-you-can.

Here’s wishing you health and happiness — and full bellies — in the New Year. See you next week!
